Review Topic: OverviewInterisland (round trip) tickets cost $100 or more but you can save your hard earned $ by redeeming as little as 5,000 frequent flyer miles. This works for American, United, Continental, and Northwest airlines. I have been using FF miles for interisland tickets for all of my Hawaii trips.
I will try to share tips on redeeming FF ticket for Hawaii trip next.
Both Aloha and Hawaiian airlines partnered with major airlines and let you can earn and redeem miles on their flight. This is a great news even if you are an infrequent flyer and those who do not have enough miles for other award tickets.
Aloha Airlines -
United (www.ual.com/site/primary/0,10017,1183,00.html)
5,000 miles
Northwest (www.nwa.com/freqfly/direct/charts/zone16.shtml)
5,000 miles but must be in conjunction with NW Hawaiian award ticket
Hawaiian Airlines -
American (www.aa.com)
5,000 miles
15,000 miles for a 8-day Island Pass
Continental (www.onepass.com/charthawaiian.htm)
10,000 miles -> not a good value
Northwest (www.nwa.com/freqfly/direct/charts/zone16.shtml)
5,000 miles
For those who are not into FF miles 5,000 miles are easy to earn. Both MCI and Sprint give out 5,000 or more miles for switching long distance service. You can get as much as 10,000 miles for getting airlines' affiliated credit card. Once you are a FF member, you will get invitation for FF credit cards. If you wait for a promotion, you will easily get 5,000 miles. For an example, I got 10,000 miles for getting American Airlines/Citibank MasterCard with $55 annual fee. Those miles saved me $200 on my last Hawaii trip. I have links to MCI and Sprint deals on my website for those who are interested www.valueconsumer.com/eDeals/Comm.htm
If you have to buy interisland tickets, buy them in Hawaii. They are cheaper there; oneway tickets cost around $50-$55 at Hawaiian travel agencies. When you make reservation just tell the operator that you have interisland flight coupon. Then buy the tickets when you get there. Lastly, if you don't have time before your interisland flight, Aloha Airlines give AAA members 25% discount on regular tickets (not interisland coupons) and Hawaiian tickets are available at many ATMs in Hawaii including at airports.
